Exercise 4-1

Go to the National Occupational Classification Web site at http://www23.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/2001/e/groups/index.shtml and determine how the classification system is divided and sub-divided.

Find the NOC job description for your current job (or one you recently had).

  1. How closely does the NOC job description match your job?
  2. Would the NOC be helpful for an HR manager? If so, why?

From their list of job descriptions, choose any job description and compare it to the format suggested on page 157 of the textbook. Note only the job descriptions with green marker are available to non-subscribers.

  1. What are the similarities/differences in the formatting?
  2. What do you like and/or dislike about the job descriptions on this site?
  3. How clear and specific is the job description? Using the guidelines on page 102 of your textbook to help you evaluate the clarity.
  4. Identify any wording that should be changed and select new wording from http://www.job-analysis.net/G053.htm
