Chapter 11: Employee Benefits

Exercise 11-1

Does your employer provide you with a health care plan? What do you think the coverage is worth? How can you find out?

Go to www.benefits.ml.com/ and get an instant individual health and dental care quote.

You can select a variety of carriers to get a quote from. Just provide the demographic information required, and try to select a plan that is as close to your company-provided coverage. If you don’t have an employer sponsored health care plan, then just select the minimum coverage you think you would need.

Now compare the cost of the individual coverage to your group coverage. Would you be able to afford the level of coverage provided by your employer on your own? How can companies get the message across about the cost of this coverage?

Exercise 11-2

You’ve just been hired as the HR Manager for a large, national retail store. On your first day the following three questions regarding government sponsored benefits appeared on your desk. Use the links provided to provide responses for each question.

Question 1
The store manager in Regina has hired 10 part-time employees. The store has over 50 full time employees. Are the part-time employees eligible for benefit coverage? Are part-time employees in the Mississauga store eligible for benefit coverage?

Question 2
The store manager in the Yellowknife store wants to know how many statutory holidays her employees are eligible for. What about employees in the Halifax and Montreal stores?

Question 3
The Company will be laying off employees in the Regina and Charlottetown stores. Put together a brief explanation of the Employment Insurance benefits these employees may be eligible to receive. All employees have a minimum of 2 years continuous service with the company.
